Blade vs Burr Grinders
The blade grinder is just what it sounds like – a large blade which looks like a propeller chops up the coffee beans.
A burr grinder is similar to clock gears, in that there are 2 pieces (called burrs) that fit together like clockwork to grind the coffee beans in a very precise and uniform manner.
How Burr Grinders Work
Burr grinders provide more control over the size of the coffee grinds because when the burrs are farther apart the grind is larger (ideal for french press coffee) and when the burrs are very close together the coffee grinds are much finer (perfect for espresso).
Burr grinders can be flat or cone shaped (connical burrs) but either way they work the same and do an excellent job of grinding up coffee beans.
Which Coffee Grinder is the Best?
Burr grinders provide the best tasting cup of coffee because when coffee grinds are not uniform the grinds release flavor at different rates making the coffee more bitter. The occasional coffee-drinker will likely be happy with the more affordable blade grinders but for coffee addicts that religiously have a cup or two a day, a burr grinder is definitely the way to go.
